Day 1 of the Best of our Lives

Have you heard that song?

It’s day one of the rest of my life
It’s day one of the best of my life
I’m marching on to the beat of a brand new drum
Yeah, here I come
The future has begun
Day one

We sing that song fairly often around our house. Whenever we need to start the day over. Whenever mama’s crashing because all control has spiraled away from her (me). Whenever we get frustrated that things haven’t gone our way. Whenever a child has gotten so worked up that s/he can no longer control themselves. Whenever we hear it on the radio. Whenever it’s morning time. Whenever…wherever. We love that song.

It’s day one
And here comes the sun, yeah
And so we began. On day one of school today, in the beginning of what most people in the United States call summer. Because it’s what we do. We don’t follow the norm. It’s crazy hot in Mississippi and it’s not much fun being outside when it’s this humidly miserable. (Yes, humidly is a word. Come down here and you can experience it for yourself.) We’ll plan a break in October and November when the weather starts to feel like fall and we want to be out.

Every morning, every morning
I will fix my eyes on You
We started the day focusing on God’s word. Add a little poetry, some Scripture memory work, and a picture book read aloud (to appease the toddler), and you have the beginning of our day. Day one.
Every morning, every morning
Every morning, mercy’s new
But then babies cry, toddlers fuss, children whine and grow impatient. so, we restart. God’s mercy covers our mistakes. His mercy grants me the patience to deal with chaos.

Every morning, every morning
Sun’s coming up, the beginning has begun, yeah
The sun comes up and we begin. We made paper bookmarks, drew and painted in our nature journals, read, listened to God’s word, did chores, took care of wild animals, learned the history of Great Britain, played games, sang Feliz Cumpleaños on the swings, did copywork, and last but most fun – had our 3rd annual “hot air” balloon ride!
It was an amazing first day.

And then post partum hormones raged. Nothing really happened that set me off. Well, ok, nothing substantial happened. I was selfishly trying to get a sunflare pic of my kids in their hot air balloons. I mean, that’s what all cool people have, right? I needed one. And it didn’t happen. The kids were done flying their hot air balloons. They wanted popsicles. I wanted a sunflare pic. I could just feel myself drop, emotions bubbling so close I felt like a volcano ready to explode.
It’s day one of the rest of my life
It’s day one of the best of my life
I’m marching on to the beat of a brand new drum
Yeah, here I come
The future has begun
Day one
